À l’époque où je me suis éveillé à la musique, les artistes qui sortaient des albums de Noël n’étaient pas ceux qui figuraient sur les posters de ma chambre. Je n’ai pas le souvenir d’avoir vu Jim Kerr ou David Sylvian en costume du Père Noël, c’était plutôt l’affaire de Sacha Distel ou Carlos. Cet exercice m’est apparu séduisant un peu plus tard, lorsque j’ai découvert par exemple le Christmas album de Phil Spector ou plus récemment celui du groupe Low. Cependant, mon sens des traditions plutôt limité m’interdisait de concourir à cette parade musicale de Noël avec mon groupe, Orwell. Et puis, alors que je triais quelques archives, plusieurs découvertes m’ont fait penser que ce serait peut-être le moment de remplir une hotte virtuelle à chansons… Tout d’abord cette reprise de Joe Raposo, directeur musical du show télé Sesame Street. Il y a une dizaine d’années, un label indépendant américain m’avait sollicité pour enregistrer une reprise de cet artiste et j’avais choisi le titre Flying, composé par Jeff Moss et chanté par Joe Raposo, dont il n’existe pas de version discographique à ma connaissance. Malheureusement, la compilation “tribute” n’est jamais sortie et le morceau était resté dans mes tiroirs. Plus loin je tombais sur une reprise des Kinks, Mr. Pleasant, sans rapport avec l’enfance ou les fêtes de fin d’année, mais dont l’espièglerie chère à Ray Davies me semblait seoir à la collection de chansons qui se dessinait. Encore une compilation “tribute” avortée… Cette fois pour saluer les compositions subtiles de Stephen Duffy et The Lilac Time. Nous avions enregistré le mélancolique Finistère, idéal pour réchauffer une froide soirée hivernale, lui aussi resté dans les cartons. Pourquoi ne pas l’inclure dans cette sélection ? Aucun doute sur la pertinence d’inviter The Man With All The Toys dans la playlist, cette reprise du Christmas album des Beach Boys avait initialement été enregistrée pour la compilation en ligne Pop à Noël initiée par de sympathiques activistes nancéiens. Enfin, pour clôturer cet E.P., j’ai pensé qu’une version instrumentale du morceau À ce jour, qui figure sur l’album Exposition universelle, conviendrait bien, avec ses arrangements chatoyants, à l’humeur soyeuse de Sunny Songs for Winter.
Looking back, I notice how the artists that have released Christmas albums were not the ones whose posters I hung on my walls. My adolescence favorites, like Jim Kerr and David Sylvian, never dressed as Santa or trafficked in holiday cheer. Instead it was French singers like Sacha Distel or Carlos dominated the holiday season of my formative years. Decades later as grownup musician, I began to appreciate some Christmas albums including Phil Spector’ Christmas Gift for You and more recently, Low’s Christmas. Even so, my rather limited sense of tradition prevented me from competing in each successive holiday season’s musical parade, through my band Orwell. Until now. Sort of. As I was searching through my sonic archives recently, I uncovered a few elements that inspired me to populate a musical village of song and create my very own (almost) Christmas collection. Here is what I found: The first song, in my gentle nod towards the season of goodwill, was originally performed by Joe Raposo, the musical director of Sesame Street television show. Ten years ago, an American record label requested I record a cover of by Joe. I chose the Flying (composed by Jeff Moss). As is often the case, the tribute album never saw the light of day, and so my version languished, waiting for this moment. Digging further in my crates, I came across a cover of The Kinks, Mr. Pleasant. My rendition is unrelated to childhood or the holiday season, but the classic Ray Davies playfulness of the tune made it appropriate for inclusion. Another abortive tribute project, this time in celebration to the subtle compositions of Stephen Duffy and The Lilac Time, left me with a recording of the melancholic Finistère, whose soothing nostalgia can warm even the coldest winter evening. This brings me to The Man With All The Toys, the only actual Christmas song in this batch, originally from the classic Beach Boys Christmas album. My version was originally recorded for the online compilation Pop à Noël, created by artists from my home base, Nancy, France. The cherry atop this seasonal sundae of sound is an instrumental version of À ce jour, featured on Orwell’s album Exposition Universelle. This song’s shimmering arrangement casts an aura of warmth that fits snugly into the silky mood of Sunny Songs for Winter.
